Early Beginnings: My Journey in Mechanical Engineering

Hi, I’m Vinayak from Maharashtra. I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2020. Like many fresh graduates, I was unsure of what my future held. I initially decided to prepare for the GATE exam to pursue higher studies in engineering. Despite my hard work, I couldn’t achieve the marks I needed.

Financial challenges meant I had to take a different route. To support my family, I joined a BPO company, a talent acquisition firm. Over the next year, I worked while still preparing for GATE. However, during this period, I started questioning whether mechanical engineering was truly my passion.

Discovering My Passion for Web Development

It was while working at the BPO that I found myself drawn to programming. Conversations with computer science students sparked my curiosity about coding, and I began learning Java programming. This was my first step into the world of web development.

I even participated in the NPTEL exam and scored a silver certification with 77%. But life had its challenges—family responsibilities, financial pressures, and even major events like weddings meant I couldn’t focus solely on studying. So, I made a decision: I would continue working at the BPO while dedicating my spare time to pursuing web development.

Balancing Work and Learning

Balancing a full-time job with learning web development wasn’t easy, but I was determined. I took up freelance work as a subject matter expert, which gave me the flexibility to study and improve my skills. I focused on not wasting too much time on basics like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, instead diving deep into projects and applying what I learned.

Over seven months, I built several projects. Initially, I concentrated on HTML and CSS, later moving to more complex JavaScript concepts. These projects helped me not only practice coding but also understand how to approach real-world applications.

Building Skills Through Projects

I firmly believe that the best way to learn is by doing. One of my most rewarding projects was a job listing application, where I applied both front-end and back-end skills. It wasn’t just about completing tasks—it was about understanding the logic behind the code.

To anyone starting out, my advice is simple: focus on building meaningful projects. Showcase your ability to solve complex problems, create appealing user interfaces, and integrate back-end systems seamlessly. These skills are what set you apart as a full stack developer.

Joining Cuvette: My Turning Point

Eventually, I joined Cuvette, and that’s when everything changed. The program offered the structured learning environment I needed. Through detailed lectures and hands-on guidance, I worked on a capstone project that integrated front-end and back-end development. This project was a game-changer for me—it taught me how to create RESTful APIs and understand the architecture of web applications.

The placement team at Cuvette provided constant support and encouragement. Their feedback after each assignment was invaluable, and their structured guidance helped me prepare for my technical interviews.

Achieving My Dream: Becoming a Full Stack Developer

After completing the program and acing my final evaluation, I received a call for a technical interview. The process was challenging, but the solid foundation I built during my time at Cuvette gave me the confidence to succeed.

When I finally got the offer for a software engineering trainee position specialising in full stack development, I felt an overwhelming sense of accomplishment. It was the result of two years of perseverance and less than seven months of focused learning at Cuvette.

Advice for Aspiring Developers

Reflecting on my journey, I would tell anyone considering a career switch to focus on what truly matters: learning by doing. Don’t spend too much time on the basics—work on projects that challenge you and showcase your skills. With the right guidance and consistent effort, you can achieve your goals in the tech industry.

Final Thoughts

My journey from mechanical engineering to full stack development has been life-changing. Cuvette not only helped me gain the technical skills I needed but also provided the structured support to navigate this transition.

If you’re looking to switch careers or start fresh in tech, take that leap. With determination, adaptability, and the right resources, you can transform your dreams into reality.
